What to do in case of thunderstorms

When a storm is coming, look for darkening skies, flashes of light or increasing wind. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the storm to be struck by lightning. Go to safe shelter immediately!

If you are at home, it is better to unplug appliances (telephone lines and metal pipes can conduct electricity). However, leaving lights on does not increase the chances of being struck by lightning. Don't take a shower or a bath.

If you are caught outside:

  • If you are in a forest, take shelter under the shorter trees.
  • If you are in a boat or swimming, get to land and find shelter.
  • If you can, go to an open place away from trees, poles or metal objects. Make sure the place you pick is not subject to flooding.
  • Become a very small target! Squat low to the ground. Place your hands on your knees with your head between them. Lying flat on the ground will make you a larger target!
