Chapter 8 - Garbage (3)

Children clean backyard
ELPHI

Children, garbage can be an authentic disaster. And one that we are building up every day

MAKI

That’s not a natural disaster!

ELPHI

Be serious, children. Banana peels are bio-degradable garbage, Monkito, but garbage. And garbage can cause many diseases.

BUNDI

And rats!

ELPHI

(VOICE TREMBLING) Ughhh, don’t remind me! (T)

MAKI

Humans are destroying our nature.

ELPHI

Indeed, Maki! They produce tons of garbage. And much of it can not be recycled by Mother Nature for thousands of years.

BINDU

What can we do?

ELPHI

There are many things we can do.

MAKI

(LAUGHING) For a start Monkito can take a bath!

BINDU

(LAUGHING) Throw himself in the trash can…

MONKITO

Hey, hey… You two are getting personal.

ELPHI

This is what we are going to do: we will start a project contest.

MAKI

About garbage?

ELPHI

Yes. What to do to solve the garbage problem. There will be prizes for the best three projects.

MONKITO

Since I am a reporter, I will make radio programs explaining the situation.

ELPHI

Very good idea!

MAKI

We can start campaigns in our communities. Something like “Keep Dengue away”!

BINDU

And we can get help from our parents to clean garbage in the streets.

ELPHI

Bravo children, that’s the spirit!
