Chapter 4 - Almost buried (2)

Buried
BINDU

We are lucky not to have them here…

ELPHI

Yes, but we can have landslides…

MAKI

What's that?

ELPHI

Landslides are provoked by heavy rains. The water flows from the higher part of the mountain, moving earth and rocks… sometimes also trees and other things...

BINDU

That’s not too bad…

ELPHI

Well… a big landslide can destroy houses… and bury anything in its path down the mountain…

MAKI

(AFRAID) Has anybody died of a landslide?

ELPHI

It depends of where you are… A lot of people have died buried by landslides. They didn’t have time to move out of their houses.

MAKI

Why didn’t they get out on time?

ELPHI

People are sometimes afraid of losing their values.

MONKITO

So we also have to be prepared against landslides…

ELPHI

Yes. Who knows how to be prepared?

MONKITO

I do. Everyone can live in the trees, like us!

ELPHI

(LAUGHING) That’s good for small thin animals like you. (T) But what about me?

MONKITO

(LAUGHING) We can find a very big tree. Miss Elphi.

ELPHI

No, most animals simply have to live on top of the earth, my children. So other measures have to be taken. Who can name a few?

MAKI

Not to build near the edge of the mountains!

MONKITO

Move your house to a safer place!

ELPHI

That’s very right! And if it rains like today, it’s better to pay attention to the weatherman. All the time!

MONKITO

Listen to the radio!
